I guess in this blog I will simply talk about TMC (traffic management center).
I believe the TMC is a very cool place! I had the chance to go here for a tour and I got to learn a lot of interesting things.
So when I entered the first thing I saw was a bunch of screens displaying live camera feed from a bunch of intersections.
It felt just like the movies! Anyways the engineers are constantly monitoring all intersections where they look out for any major crashes that might affect traffic flow.
Anytime someone calls the emergency service and reports the crash. The TMC room makes a crash noise which allows engineers to know that a crash has occurred.
Then they begin to look for the crash to see how major it is and whether they have to change the signal timing.
Sometimes the employees there would have trouble finding the collision
so they would simply just wait for the fire truck to arrive and follow wherever it goes as it is heading right towards the collision.
Also, the cool thing that I got to learn was that there were roughly 500 cameras actively monitoring. The engineers often work overtime on days like Canada day as the traffic is intense and very heavy on that day.
So, they spend additional time trying to manage the traffic. In general, the place was very cool and honestly, it is what makes transportation engineering so cool!
It would be pretty cool to learn how to manage all the traffic.
