The Opticom system!

Have you ever noticed that the traffic lights change whenever emergency vehicles are coming in with their flashing lights?
Did you know that traffic lights can be controlled by emergency services vehicles (usually ambulance and fire services have this feature available)?
Yes, in the event of an emergency, the emergency services vehicles can change the traffic lights to make way
for themselves and protect public drivers. This is done with the help of the of the opticom system!
So basically traffic signals have receivers that pick up the infrared signal emitted by emergency vehicles.
Once the system receives this signal and confirms that it is from an emergency vehicle it changes
the red light to green light which allows for traffic to flow and generates space for emergency vehicles.
This greatly decreases wait times in events of an emergency which can save many lives. Honestly, after learning
about this, I am pretty amazed! I was amazed by the fact that good engineering can make the world safer, save lives, and improve the quality of life!
